Getting to know WordPress 6.7 and its new FSE features

At Blue Bee we build all our new websites in WordPress, which is the world’s leading open-source platform. We believe that the ease of use, functionality, creativity and general performance that WordPress offers, along with expertise we have in the Blue Bee team lets us design and build high-quality websites perfectly tailored to each client’s needs. You can read more on why we choose WordPress in our previous blog ‘Choosing WordPress: The Best Platform, Paired with Blue Bee’s Professional Touch’.

An FSE is a Full Site Editor that lets you design and customise every part of your website with easy-to-use building blocks. This makes building and editing faster and simpler, saving you time and money. Pairing this with functional plugins and you’ll get a site that’s both visually appealing and user-friendly.

The latest update for WordPress came in towards the end of 2024. WordPress 6.7 has several new and improved features that will allow Blue Bee to take our building and design of websites even further. Read on to find out the key improvements this latest update has bought about.

FSE Advancements

The new version of the FSE has opened up more possibilities when it comes to website layouts, giving more flexibility to bring the ideas of the client and the visions of the designer into reality.

As mentioned above the FSE allows you to build a website with a selection of building blocks. The new 6.7 version allows these blocks and templates to more adaptable. For example, improvements to reusable blocks helps keep more consistency across the various pages on the website. Now designers can switch between both pre-set templates and bespoke designs without having to make any changes to the coding. This not only allows the designers more freedom and flexibility, but also saves time from the development side of things.

The new ‘Zoom Out Mode’ lets you see and edit the entire page layout on one screen. Before, a designer would have to keep switching to preview mode, to see how their edits looked on the page as a whole. Once again, a small change, but one that makes the life of those building the site easier, resulting in more time for creativity and functionality.

Optimised Performance Features

The latest update of WordPress has bought in several new features and improvements that help the performance of the site, when it comes to loading speeds and relieving pressure on the server. One of the major changes is advanced lazy loading. Lazy loading is a technique that delays loading images and other resources on a web page until they are needed. The websites performance is improved by reducing the initial page load time.

Other improvements include database optimisation to reduce server load during periods of high traffic, and the fact it now supports HEIC image formats allows higher quality media without sacrificing any space.

More developer-friendly

WordPress 6.7 also introduces new tools for developers, making it easier to create interactive and dynamic websites. The Block Editor API has been improved, allowing for more advanced and customisable blocks. The Query Loop now offers more flexibility for displaying dynamic content, and improved debugging tools provide better logs and error visibility. These updates allow developers to build innovative, feature-rich WordPress sites with greater efficiency and control.
